Protect Coit Tower

Coit Tower is a special place. It’s an iconic symbol of our unique City, known to every San Franciscan and instantly recognized around the world. Inside Coit Tower are 27 New Deal murals by 25 artists from the 1930s that vividly depict the reality of life in California during the tumultuous era in which they were painted.

The Conservancy is helping to fund the work of Protect Coit Tower, an unincorporated association of community members, by acting as its fiscal sponsor so that donations are tax deductible.  The goal and purpose of Protect Coit Tower is to promote the preservation and restoration of Coit Tower and its historic murals, and to further public awareness and community participation in their preservation. Fundraising includes seeking foundation and corporate grants as well as donations from individuals.

Although Coit Tower is already listed on the National Register of Historic Places, architectural historian Katherine Petrin has been engaged to research and prepare documentation necessary to elevate Coit Tower and its murals to the highest status of a National Historic Landmark.
